CODIS was created in 1998 and over the last decade, the technology and science behind DNA has gone through the roof. Just as in any case, every step taken throughout the process is vital to the end result.
When it comes to DNA evidence the initial collection of the sample is equally important as the end result. After all, a good DNA sample begins with proper collection and storage. It is important for all investigators whether their title is Detective or Crime Scene Investigator, to learn how to properly collect DNA.
Here are few reminders when it comes to DNA collection:
Always Wear Gloves-It is important to reduce the risk of cross-contamination at all times.
Switch Gloves-With each sample you collect, you should have new gloves each time.
Dry Samples-Ensure samples collected are dry before placing them in their evidence box.
Separate-Each sample you collect should have it’s own evidence box, never place two in one.
Sealed/Dated-All samples collected should be sealed with evidence tape, dated, and initialed on the outside of the box.
